Vicus

Wallsend

Vicus is located on the High Street in Wallsend. The town derives its name as its location is at the end of Hadrian’s Wall.

Our design aspirations were to create a desirable and nourishing environment for living and working alongside one another, similar to the Roman village, or ‘Vicus’ that once stood on the site. This two storey mid-terrace, built in the 19th Century, had fallen into a poor state of repair.

The client approached Greatspace to bring the existing retail units to modern standards, and provide a Change of Use for the unused office space.

By reinstating the original character and refreshing the architecture, the project boasts two generous retail units and four studio apartments at first floor level.

A new residential elevation to the rear has been created by setting back the building from the site boundary. This has allowed space for a dedicated parking area, bike and refuge store, giving a more residential feel to the streetscape.

Internally, solar tunnels and bespoke storage allow additional natural light and living space, harvesting a peaceful space to accompany an urban lifestyle.
